Outdoor and marine upholstery: planning replacement cushions

A sheltered patio cushion and a boat seat are different project briefs. Describe where the piece will be used, its exposure and how it is stored. A color sample or a marine label alone does not define the complete cushion you need.

Prepare the project information

1. Setting and exposure: covered or open location, exposure time and whether cushions can be stored.
2. Shape and support: base photos, dimensions with units, curves and each piece’s orientation.
3. Assembly: removable or fixed cover, zippers and existing attachment system. Request assessment before altering it.
4. Care routine: frequency of use, where cleaning happens, drying arrangements and who keeps the instructions.

Specify the whole cushion

Ask the upholsterer to identify the cover, insert, seams, closure and fit on the base. Record the references and expected result. If retaining an old insert, have it evaluated before approving the replacement cover.

Care depends on the product and construction
